Superficial peels are typically formulated with naturally derived acids such as alpha hydroxy acid (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acid (BHAs), including fruit and plant-based acids that have been used safely for exfoliation for centuries. These gentle peels are ideal for refining texture, boosting radiance, and addressing mild congestion with little to no downtime.

Medium-depth peels utilize stronger formulations such as trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or retinoic acid to penetrate deeper into the skin. These peels target concerns like pigmentation, acne, fine lines, and uneven tone, offering more dramatic results while still remaining controlled and customized.

I offer a wide range of advanced peel solutions from GlyMed+®, many of which are formulated not only with exfoliating acids, but also supportive ingredients such as peptides, antioxidants, and brightening agents to enhance results while supporting skin health. Options include superficial peels with 20-30% AHAs and BHAs such as lactic, glycolic, mandelic, and salicylic acid, ideal for all skin types with mild to moderate concerns or first-time peel clients, with little to no downtime.

For more advanced concerns, the classic, layered Jessner peel combines 14% lactic acid, 14% salicylic acid, and 14% resorcinol to target acne, scarring, oily or keratinized skin, early aging, and superficial hyperpigmentation with moderate peeling. TCA peels are medium-depth, layered treatments and the gold standard for hyperpigmentation and aging, with peeling that ranges from moderate to more significant depending on strengths between 7-15%. Each peel is fully customized following a thorough skin assessment and may be cocktail-ed to achieve optimal results.

Who is a good candidate?

Good candidates are individuals looking to address acne, signs of aging, texture, scarring, and hyperpigmentation.

Who is not a good candidate?

While chemical peels are safe and effective for most people, some individuals may not be ideal candidates due to factors that could increase risks or impact results. Medical clearance may be required for certain conditions. Please consult with your healthcare provider if you are unsure. Precautions to consider:

Pregnancy.
Patients who are undergoing treatment for skin cancer.
Accutane - must wait at least 6 months.
Compromised skin (dermatitis, sunburn, open wounds or sores, infection) in the treatment area.
Autoimmune conditions that affect skin healing (like lupus or active vitiligo) - consult with your healthcare provider first.

When will I see results?

Improvements are often visible shortly after the first treatment, with more significant results after subsequent sessions. For best results, a series of treatments in 1-4 week intervals is usually recommended, depending on what peel is performed.

How long do results last?

Lighter peels may require maintenance treatments every 1-2 months, while deeper peels offer results that can last several months, depending on the individual’s skin care routine and condition.

Is there any downtime or side effects?

Superficial peels and BioRePeel typically have zero to minimal downtime, while Jessner and TCA peels can have more moderate peeling. VI Peels have significantly more downtime ranging from a few days to a week or more. There may be redness, dryness, and peeling as side effects. With deeper peels, freckles and sunspots may initially turn slightly darker and then lighten within a few days. This is normal and part of the process.

How does this treatment work?

It involves applying a chemical solution to your skin and leaving it on for a certain period, causing it to exfoliate and possibly peel off. The active ingredients might cause a slight stinging or burning sensation during the application, which usually subsides once the peel takes effect.

Before Treatment

Avoid direct sun exposure, including tanning beds, for at least 3 days prior to treatment. Use SPF 30+ if sun exposure is unavoidable.
Avoid skin irritants (products containing tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide or acne medications, vitamin C if strong or acidic, hydroquinone, AHAs, BHAs, astringents, depilatories, waxing, shaving, etc.) or any other exfoliating products in the treatment area for at least 7 days prior to treatment.
Avoid facial injections or fillers, lasers, and other facial treatments for 1-2 weeks before receiving a chemical peel.

After Treatment

Limited activity and exercise is advised, as well as no sweating, excessive heat, swimming, hot showers, and sauna use for at least 48 hours or until skin is fully healed.
Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 1 week following treatment. Keep the area covered and apply a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) SPF 30+ to treatment area.
Avoid artificial tanning (spray tans, tanning lotions, etc.) and skin irritants (products containing tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide or acne medications, vitamin C if strong or acidic, hydroquinone, AHAs, BHAs, astringents, depilatories, waxing, shaving, etc.) or any other exfoliating products in the treatment area for at least 5 days or until skin is fully healed.
Avoid putting on makeup immediately after.
